Organization

Organization is one of the important features of paragraph.  lets learn about it in detail.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sentence which carries the central idea is called the topic sentence. The placement of the topic sentence, coherence, and cohesion should be properly organized in paragraph to make it clear and complete  for the readers. Furthermore, there can be other factors that are related to the organization. Organization mainly include the following factors:

Length

Length is one of the important feature of good paragraph. Let's know in detail.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

We do not have particular rules about the length of a paragraph. The length of a paragraph depends on the nature of the topic  and the purpose of the writer what and to what extent he wants to mentioned in the text. The current practice of writing a short paragraph seems to be more appropriate than the longer ones. Shorter paragraphs are easier and clearer for the readers. On the other hand, very short paragraphs cannot convey the complete information to the readers. So it is best to make paragraph of moderate but varied length depending upon the requirement.

Features of a Good Paragraph

Unity, length, and organization can be, primarily, viewed as the factors that influence a paragraph. If these factors are properly maintained while producing  a paragraph,it will be a good paragraph consisting all the features required. The factors or features which determine the quality and clarity of a paragraph are:-

              unity

              Length

         Organization

Unity

Let's know in detail about unity, one of the features of a good paragraph.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

unity:- A paragraph is a piece of writing in which central or controlling idea is developed by means of supporting details. Every sentence in the paragraph must be closely connected with the topic of the paragraph. All the supporting details should directly be related to the central idea. A paragraph  is said to be badly constructed if it lacks unity.

The principle of unity is violated due to three main causes. The causes which lead our paragraph to the violation of the principle of unity are as below:

  1. Unity is violated  when more than one central idea is included in a paragraph, i.e. only one central idea should be introduced and developed.

2.Unity is also violated when the matter which is enough for only one paragraph is distributed over two or three paragraphs separately.

3. unity is violated by the introduction of irrelevancies and useless expressions.

Argumentative/ Expository Paragraph

     An argumentative paragraph explains the saying or exposition. The writer of the paragraph  should try to give his/her thought to the readers in order to establish the truth of the saying. the writer tries to make others his/her saying. The sayings are suitable topics for these types of the paragraphs: For example;

"Ruskin called books 'Kings' Treasuries.Books are, indeed, the richest possession of mankind. The world would be barren without books. Life would lose half of its charm if books were banished from the world. Books are the friends of the friendless. 'Perhaps no other thing has such power to lift the poor out of his poverty, the wretched out of his misery, to make the burden bearer forget his burden, the sick his suffering, the sorrow his grief,  the down- trodden his degeradation, as books. They are friends to the lonely, companions to the deserted, joy to the joyless, good cheer to the disheartened, a helper to the helpless and a consoler to the afflicted. They bring light into the darkness and sunshine into shadow"
The paragraph above exposits or argues why and to what extent books are friends of everyone. In this kind of writing, the writer tries to clarify his opinion by mentioning his arguments.

Reflective paragraaph

     Reflective Paragraph:- A reflective paragraph consists of reflections upon some topics, which are        generally of an abstract nature; such as habits, politics,discipline and so on. A reflective                      paragraph includes the experience of the writer on a particular topic. For example;

Perseverance is,not because the very hinge of all virtues. We fail in our undertaking in the                   world, not because we have no strength of will and tenacity of spirit to carry our schemes.
We sometimes waste our force on imaginary difficulties- difficulties which melt into the                        nothingness of a dream before dogged  perseverance. It has been well said :
"Patience and perseverance will overcome mountains'. the smallest brook on the earth, by                   counting to run, has hollowed out for itself a considerable valley to flow in. Let us, therefore,              extol the virtue of perseverance. Without it all the rest are little better than fancy-gold, which
glitters in your purse, but when taken to market proves to be slate or cinders".

The paragraphs as such reflect the opinions of the writers upon some subjects.

Narrative Paragraph

A narrative paragraphs describes the historical event, stories, biographies and so on .
The writer of the narrative paragraph narrates paragraph narrates the subject matter.
It is, to some extent, reflective, too.For example:

"Only last year I witnessed what might have been a fatal accident. I was out for a stroll on the               Mall. At the cross roads near the General Post office I saw a car coming down, which swept                 round the corner of the road and crashed into another coming up. Happily no one was killed
but several people sustained injuries. the driver was knocked senseless. The two cars were
completely wrecked. The policeman on point duty had raised his hand to stop one of those                    cars. But coming as it was at the speed of about eighty miles an hour the driver could not                   apply brakes in time"

Descriptive Paragraph

     Descriptive Paragraph :-

A descriptive paragraph describes places, objects/things such as countries, rivers,
towns, buildings: and so on and so forth. A descriptive paragraph  is an accurate
account of the subject matter which imparts the factual information. For example

"Protsmouth  is an industrial city on the sourthern coast of England. although
the largest proportion of the working population is employed in the naval
dockyards, there are many other  industries in the area . For examples, there
are clothing factories, manufactures of electrical components, light machine
industries and chemical industries. The naval dockyards have been in existence
for five centuries, but most of the other industries have been established
                                 during the past 20 years"(Chaplen 1976).
The above paragraph is a simple and clear description of an industrial city
in England. The paragraphs explains the changes taken place during the past
20 years and why they have taken place as well.

Classification of Paragraphs

Writing Paragraph

'Paragraph' has been defined differently by different scholars and authors but the theme carried by these definitions seems to be similar. Some of the definitions have been extracted as below:
"Paragraph is a distinct section or piece of writing usually consisting of several sentences dealing with a single theme" (Hornby 1996).developed by means of supporting details

" Paragraph is a unit of information unified by a controlling idea"(Cahplen 1970).

"A paragraph is a unit of composition in which a central idea is  developed by means of supporting details"(Narayanswami 2000).

"A paragraph is a group of sentences with unity of purpose. It deals with one distinct aspect or division of subject, and thus forms an integral part of the whole composition"(Dave et. al.1988).

A paragraph can be defined as a piece of writing in which one's thought as the central idea or controlling idea is developed by means of supporting details. The supporting details can be examples, comparative statements, or other related facts. Every good paragraph should have a controlling idea, to which its sentence are related. A paragraph is regarded as a good one only if the readers can completely understand the of unit of information it contains; and if its central or controlling idea is completely developed by means of appropriate supporting details.

While producing a paragraph for our purpose, we have to arrange the sentences clarifying the idea so that we can meet our aim of  expressing our thoughts. Coherently organised sentences  clarify the central idea of the paragraph. The sentences that do not relate to the central idea must not be included in the paragraph.
